Sometimes, I get sent a file with a strange extension. How can I tell what it is so that I can open it?
There are plenty of comprehensive lists of extensions on the internet - two such examples are http://filext.com/ and http://extsearch.com. Please note that there's no official body handing out and controlling the use of file extensions. So the fact that the site says a file ending in XYZ is a particular sort of file is no guarantee that it actually is. It is, however, the best indication of the contents you're going to get.
